Pontederia cordata or "Pickerel Weed"

Marginal aquatic perennial with erect, lance shaped triangular to ovate, glossy, emergent, floating or submerged leaves, 8 inches wide, with heart-shaped bases, borne on stalks to 10 inches long.  From late spring to autumn, tubular blue flowers are produced in closely packed spikes on flowerstalks to 14 inches tall.  Overall height 3 to 4 1/2 feet.  Native to E. North America to Caribbean.  Hardiness rating zone 3-11.  Grow at the margins of a pond, or in a large, water-filled barrel on a sunny, sheltered patio.

Planted Out:  Summer 1998 in ditch on front property line

Details:  Bloomed very well last year, freeze killed foliage, came back from roots.  Very vigorous.  Began blooming around March 1999.  Bees love the flowers.
