African Iris

Dietes Vegeta, or Dietes iridioides, is a rhizomatous perennial with a fan of sword shaped, dark green, basal leaves, 24 inches long.  White flowers with a yellow mark at the center of each of the 3 larger tepals, are produced from spring to summer.  Hardiness rating is zone 9-10, but it is a reliable performer in the New Orleans area.  It should be grown in moist, but well draimed soil in sun or partial shade.  It does tolerate poor, dry soils.  The flowering stems should not be cut back after flowering.

Planted Out:  Originally planted one in Island Bed 2 and One in Iris bed on West side of driveway.  Moved one from the Iris bed next to the other one in Island Bed 2.  The original one planted there did not survive, but this one did.   Began blooming April 25, 1999.
