Spider Lily

A genus of about 40 species of bulbous perennials, some evergreen, found in grassland and rocky habitats from Southern United States to South America.  In spring, summer, or winter, they bear terminal umbels of fragrant flowers resembling spidery daffodils, each with 6 narrow petals and a large cup.  The leaves are basal, strap-shaped or oblong, and mid to dark green.  They should be grown in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.  Hardiness rating ranges from zone 6 - 11, depending upon species.

From Where:  Some dug up in ditch outside of Alexandria, LA.   Also, obtained some from Bonne Carre Spillway outside of New Orleans.

Price Paid:  None

Planted out:  Ones from Alexandria were planted in Island Bed 2, ones from spillway were planted in Iris Bed 1.

1999 Details:  Began blooming 3/21/99
