Dianthus 'Zing Rose'

Dianthus Zing Rose
"Zing Rose"

Dianthus are evergreen or semi-evergreen, mainly summer-flowering perennials, annuals, and biennials grown for their mass of flowers, often scented.   Included are carnations and "pinks", which are excellent for cut flowers and border decoration.  "Zing Rose" belongs to the group known as Dianthus deltoides, or maiden pink.  This is one of the few species that will thrive in partial shade.  This plant is easy to grow and will self-sow in most gardens.   "Zing Rose" produces dozens of blooms at a time beginning in late spring or early summer, and repeating until frost if sheared after the first flush of bloom.   It is a low growing plant that scarcely reaches 6 inches, a good choice for the front of the border.  Hardiness rating zones 3-8.  It demands perfectly drained soil but is not choosy about clay or sand, it does prefer a pH of 6.5 to 7.0.   Dianthus should not be mulched, as this may encourage rot around the stems.
